THE VERY BEST

Claire and I had two stocking stuffer rituals that endured for years: the re-gifting of an atrocious blue ruffled shower bonnet and Hallmark pocket calendars.

If you want a mental image of the shower cap, think Little House on the Prairie meets Moll Flanders. The package featured a 70s buxom brunette who smiled oh-so seductively at the camera. Her hair wasn't going to get wet on that bonnet's watch.

Too Merry

My money is on Claire for the genesis of the gift as she's a kind and considerate sister who would want to help her nut-bar sister deal with her almost phobic dislike of the feeling of wet hair on skin. Once presented, it was important to tuck the cap away until the following year. I'm not sure when it disappeared, but I expect that one year, when I finally unpack that last box of hell tucked away in the office closet, I'll discover a little something that I can send her way.

The best stocking stuffers were freebies and the king of all freebies was the Hallmark pocket calendar (mostly purloined from the Billings Bridge Shopping Plaza). Again this is something that has fallen by the wayside, but not this year. Thanks to Longs Drugs in Kailua-Kona, I'm caring enough to send the very best.
